How to Cancel Your TV Licence and Get a Refund

You can cancel at any time and get a pro-rata refund for remaining months. Here is the step-by-step process.

Step-by-Step Cancellation

1

Decide if you still need one

Make sure you will not be watching any live TV broadcasts or using BBC iPlayer after cancellation. Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and other streaming services are fine without a licence.

2

Cancel online or by phone

Go to tvlicensing.co.uk and use the cancellation form, or call 0300 790 6165. You will need your licence number (on your confirmation email or letter).

3

Confirm your refund

If you have full months remaining, TV Licensing will calculate your refund. They will tell you the amount during the cancellation process.

4

Wait for your refund

Refunds are processed within 21 days. Payment is by cheque or BACS transfer to your bank account if you paid by Direct Debit.

5

Declare you don't need one

After cancelling, declare at tvlicensing.co.uk that you no longer need a licence. This stops enforcement letters arriving at your address for approximately 2 years.

Common Questions

How do I cancel my TV licence?
Cancel online at tvlicensing.co.uk or call 0300 790 6165 (open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8:30am to 1pm). You will need your TV licence number, which is on your licence confirmation email or letter. The process takes about 5 minutes.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you paid for a full year upfront, you will get a refund for any complete months remaining. For example, if you cancel 7 months into a 12-month licence, you get 5 months refunded. Partial months are not included. The refund is processed within 21 days.
Can I cancel mid-year?
Yes, you can cancel at any time. There is no penalty for early cancellation. You simply get a pro-rata refund for remaining complete months. If you pay by Direct Debit, TV Licensing will cancel the DD for you.
What happens after I cancel?
You should immediately declare at tvlicensing.co.uk that you no longer need a licence. This stops the enforcement letters for approximately 2 years, after which you may need to redeclare. You must not watch any live TV or use BBC iPlayer after cancellation.
How is the refund paid?
Refunds are usually paid by cheque posted to your address. If you paid by Direct Debit, the refund may be returned to your bank account via BACS. Processing takes up to 21 days.
Do I need to cancel my Direct Debit separately?
No. If you cancel your TV licence, TV Licensing will cancel the Direct Debit for you. You do not need to contact your bank separately, though you can if you want to be certain.
